The American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) is the non-profit trade association representing members of the professional moving industry based primarily in the United States. Its 3,500 members include van lines, their agents, independent movers, forwarders, and industry suppliers (AMSA does not represent the self storage industry).
Member companies include national and international firms offering moving and associated storage services for households and businesses; transportation for sensitive freight including trade show displays, electronics, scientific and medical equipment, automobiles, fine art, and equipment for professional sports teams; and increasingly, portable on-demand storage and records storage and management.
Members also handle national and international employee relocation and personal property moves for the private sector and the U.S. government (through the General Services Administration) as well as for active duty U.S. military personnel (Department of Defense business represents the industry’s largest single customer). Since 2007 AMSA has hosted GSA’s Household Goods Freight Forum at its annual conference.
Members must abide by an ethical code of conduct and comply with state, and for interstate moves federal, transportation safety and consumer protection regulations. AMSA administers the industry’s ProMover quality certification program for member companies and provides professional training and certification for individuals. It also provides members with state and federal government representation, legal and tax assistance, financial and statistical reporting, loss and damage claim dispute arbitration, safety and compliance services, government rate filing, public relations, professional conferences, and publications. Its bimonthly magazine is Direction.
Its Moving & Storage Institute was founded in 2001 for industry research and charitable and educational purposes.
Based in Alexandria, Virginia, AMSA is affiliated with 27 state moving associations and several international moving associations.
History
AMSA is the result of mergers of three predecessors — the National Moving & Storage Association (NMSA), the American Movers Conference (AMC), and the Household Goods Carriers’ Bureau (HGCB).
The NMSA, the first national trade association for movers in America, was founded in Chicago in 1920 as the National Furniture Warehousemen’s Association.
In 1935, the Household Goods Movers’ Group of the American Trucking Association was formed as a separate national trade organization, changing its name in 1962 to the American Movers Conference.
The HGCB was established in 1936 to help carriers comply with the Motor Carrier Act of 1935.
In 1994, the AMC and the HGCB merged, and in 1998, the AMC and NMSA merged to form AMSA.
