Guide to Getting Around is a 90 minute American television documentary, the product of Director (and occasional stand-up comedian) Andrew Hecker

Plot synopsis

Centered around the transportation systems of Ventura County, California, Hecker addresses Building and Development, Road Design, Business/Rush Hours, Oil Prices and Alternative Fuel Technology. But the main focus is on the successes and failures of Public Transportation. The local transportation agencies like VISTA, Gold Coast Transit and Metrolink all come under his microscope.

In order to show examples, Hecker travels to Brazil to see a country driving on Alcohol

In a direct assault on Traffic Engineers, played as a Professional Wrestler, Hecker attacks their historical lack of foresight in designs that use delaying, traffic causing stoplights instead of the solutions he advocates like cloverleafs, roundabouts

For balance there are lengthy interview segments with Ginger Gerhardi, the now retired Executive Director for the Ventura County Transportation Commission. She was involved over much of the period of time when the systems were developed, particularly the Metrolink Train system was developed. Ginger explains “Why things are the way they are.”

Throughout, Hecker expresses frustration with “governmentspeak,” limited operating hours and poor advertising on the part of the transportation agencies. But he’s not one sided in his complaints, accusing members of the public of being ignorant, irresponsible and lazy about their responsibility to use transit alternatives.
